The Highlands of Southwestern Pennsylvania encompass a three-county area in the Allegheny foothills. This four-season region once hid the exclusive resorts of wealthy Pittsburgh industrialists and now yields a wide range of activities and experiences.
Day 1 – LORENA RIVERBOAT – ZANE GREY MUSEUM – Today, we travel northeast through Ohio into Pennsylvania. We will stop en route in Zanesville, Ohio, where we will enjoy a scenic luncheon cruise aboard the Lorena Riverboat. This afternoon, we visit the Zane Grey Museum. The famous novelist was born in Zanesville in 1872 and is known for his novels of the Old West. His study is re-created in the museum and his manuscripts and other personal memorabilia are on display. We have included a delicious dinner this evening. Our hotel acommodations for the next four nights will be in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Day 2 – FALLINGWATER – FORT LIGONIER – FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL – This morning, we will tour Fallingwater House, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most widely acclaimed architectural works. This house doesn’t appear to stand on solid ground, but instead, is dramatically cantilevered over a 30 foot waterfall. Next, we step back to the 18th century as we tour Fort Ligonier, a full scale reconstruction of the 1758 fort from the French and Indian War. This afternoon, we visit the Flight 93 Memorial. It is located at the site where Flight 93 (Boeing 757) crashed in Pennsylvania during the 9/11 attack. Tonight, we have included a delicious dinner and an entertaining show at the Green Gables Restaurant. Overnight same hotel.
Day 3 – PITTSBURGH – DUQUESNE INCLINE – GATEWAY CLIPPER – This morning, we travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for an exciting day of touring. First, we board the restored cable cars of the Duquesne Incline for panoramic views of downtown Pittsburgh. Next, we have included a narrated sightseeing cruise aboard the Gateway Clipper Riverboat. Our captain and narrator will share with us interesting facts about Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania as cruise the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers. Dinner is included this evening. Overnight same hotel.
Day 4 – LAUREL CAVERNS – FORT NECESSITY – This morning, we will tour Laurel Caverns, the largest and most beautiful cave in Pennsylvania. After an included lunch, we will tour Fort Necessity National Battlefield. This was the site of George Washington’s first military action and where the first shots of the French and Indian War were fired. We have included another delicious dinner this evening.
Day 5 – HOME – This morning, we make our way back home, stopping for an included lunch en route. Meals: 4B, 3L, 4D, Show: 1
